                                 Legal vs Symbolic Ceremony — What You Need to Know

1. Symbolic ceremony  The vast majority of foreign weddings on Koh Samui are symbolic. A symbolic ceremony has no legal standing in Thailand or your home country, but it looks and feels identical to a legal wedding — vows, officiant, rings, the full experience. Couples typically register their marriage legally at home before or after the celebration. 

2. Legal ceremony in Thailand A legally recognised Thai marriage is possible but involves more paperwork. You'll need to visit your home country's embassy in Bangkok to obtain an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (or equivalent document), have it translated into Thai, and legalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The actual registration then takes place at the Koh Samui district office.

Wedding photographer

This is consistently the vendor couples regret not prioritising. Skilled destination wedding photographers in Samui are typically booked 10–14 months ahead. Look for portfolios that show experience with tropical light — midday sun and golden-hour beach shots require very different skills.

Wedding planner

For international couples, a local planner is close to essential. They manage vendor relationships, handle Thai-language communication, know which suppliers are reliable, and serve as your on-the-ground representative during months of remote planning.

Florist and stylist

Koh Samui florists work extensively with tropical species — orchids, frangipani, heliconia — that simply aren't available in many home countries. A good local florist can create stunning arrangements at a fraction of what similar work would cost in Europe or the US.
